  • Overview

    The After School program provides educational and recreational activities for children ages 5-17. The Program Aide takes responsibility for their assigned age group of children (small groups), leading a variety of age-appropriate activities compatible with the Mission of The Salvation Army.

    • Organizes, prepares, and executes age-appropriate activities for children in the assigned age group; activities such as arts and crafts, sports, educational activities, and games.
    • Ensures safety and well-being of children, always being aware of surroundings and not leaving children unattended.
    • Ensures participants meet behavioral expectations and positively intervenes when necessary.
    • Identifies and reports the need for program activity supplies.
    • Attends weekly staff meetings and trainings as required.



    The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal education, experience, skills, and/or abilities required for this position. 


    Education:   High school diploma or equivalent is desired.


    Certifications:  American Red Cross or equivalent First Aid/CPR/AED certifications are desired.


    Experience:  Previous experience working with children is preferred.



    • Good organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks.
    • Knowledge of The Salvation Army’s Safe from Harm program.

    Ability to:

    • Use sound judgment in challenging situations and apply de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques.
    • Build appropriate and positive relationships, and communicate effectively with children and parents.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff members and volunteers.
    • Effectively work with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
    • General knowledge of games and activities appropriate to the 5 – 17 year old age group.

Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

    Working Conditions:

    Working conditions will vary based on the activity being conducted. Some activities will take place indoors in a climate-controlled area while others will take place outdoors with varying temperature and humidity levels.

    At times the duties will involve working with individuals having infectious and/or communicable diseases.
