  • Overview

    The Assistant Youth Worker is needed to develop and grow the Minneapolis Central Corps’ Character Building and spiritual ministries to the youth in the community. The Assistant Youth Worker will be working with and assisting the Corps Officers as needed with a variety of children, teen, and young adult activities. This is a part time regular position. 


    • Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters and maintains positive relationships with co-workers and supervisors. This would include but not be limited to such actions: resolution of conflicts in a positive manner; courteous treatment of staff, clients and visitors; respect of others’ property and person, professional and appropriate communication to and about co-workers, supervisors and subordinates. Support the Mission of The Salvation Army by treating every donor, contact and colleague with respect and dignity, and without discrimination of any kind.
    • Lead Character Building group in lessons, emblem work, and activities, providing instruction, planning, and reports to Corps Officers.
    • Conduct and plan Sunday school small group Bible study.
    • Assist Corps Officers in maintaining group attendance and assist in statistical reporting.
    • Oversee and assist Corps Officers with volunteers within program.
    • Greet and interact with parents when dropping off their children for the program, and in communicating program planning and changes.
    • Use unstructured time to engage children in meaningful conversation.
    • Encourage respect for individuals and their differences.
    • Provide opportunities for discussion on individual or group problems or concerns.
    • Demonstrate and teach appropriate independent living skills, i.e., cleanliness, punctuality, sharing clean up and chores, sportsmanship, and table manners.
    • Be a constructive member of the staff contributing in every way possible to the health, harmony, and happiness of the Central Corps.
    • Maintain appropriate safety regulations and follow all emergency procedures.
    • Regularly assess children’s behavior and apply appropriate behavior management techniques, as needed.
    • Prepare for, and actively participate in, staff training.
    • Provide transportation to youth for programs.
    • And all other duties as assigned.


    • High School Diploma.
    • Proven experience supervising and working with children.
    • Be a team player as well as able to work independently.
    • Ability to accept supervision and guidance.
    • Have good character, integrity, adaptability, enthusiasm, a sense of humor, patience, self-control and be organized and self-motivated.
    • Ability to communicate and work with groups of varying age and skills levels, and provide necessary instruction to children and/or staff.
    • Must be able to pass The Salvation Army’s background checks, clerical screenings and meet the MVR drivers’ qualification.
    • Must be willing to support the mission of The Salvation Army.
    • It must be understood by the incumbent that the provisions of Safe From Harm will apply upon commencement of employment and also understood that the required Safe From Harm training be satisfactorily completed within the first thirty (30) days of employment.
