    POSITION TITLE:                 Volunteer Coordinator


    LOCATION/DEPT:                Emergency Disaster Services


    REPORTS TO:                     EDS Director


    FLSA CATEGORY:              Non-Exempt


    STATUS TYPE:                    Full-Time--$20-23/hr



    The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for executing strategies and procedures that lead to the overall success of the Emergency Disaster Services volunteer program.  In doing so, the Volunteer Coordinator must recruit potential volunteers and participate in training to ensure a growing base of active volunteers.



    1. Volunteer Services
      1. Develop and institute a volunteer recruitment program that reflects the specific needs of local teams in support of canteen operations throughout the division.
      2. Create volunteer programming that meets the specific needs of the daily operation of the EDS department.
      3. In conjunction with the full activation of the EDS Center, recruit and train large numbers of volunteers from corporations, the faith community, civic groups, schools, colleges, etc. to participate in EDS projects in response to major events.
      4. Visit corps throughout the Division to recruit local volunteers for local corps supported EDS teams.
      5. Assist with the recruitment of SATERN team members.
    1. Training
      1. Recruit and register potential and approved volunteers for on-going volunteer training at EDS headquarters in courses and materials developed as the Salvation Army’s national standard for training disaster volunteers.
      2. Recruit and register prospective candidates for training opportunities to serve as SATERN team members should it become necessary.
    1. Retention
      1. Develop and institute a volunteer retention program to maintain a strong, positive, and on-going relationship with established and trained disaster volunteers as well as SATERN team members.
      2. Manage the Volunteer Impact database as it relates to essential information related to each disaster volunteer program at EDS headquarters.
    1. Scheduling and Meeting Preparation
      1. Manage the coordination of new volunteer assignments such as to Canteen teams, as Duty Officers, and as EDS Team Leaders.
      2. Assist the EDS Director with scheduling EDS and SATERN meetings including mailing notices and preparing the facility.
      3. Assist in planning and preparing for EDS trainings, seminars and special events.
    1. Other Duties
      1. In a major disaster this position must train volunteers participating in the Call Center.
      2. In the event of a major disaster, must be willing to deploy should that become necessary.
      3. Assist in routine operations specifically in the areas of coordinating new volunteers related to canteen and other operational activities.
      4. Assist in the monitoring of field operations and communication as directed by Disaster Services Director.
      5. Provide assistance with securing volunteers for special duty (special events).
      6. Participate in a backup schedule responding to after hour call outs when no volunteers are available.
      7. Provide assistance with the delivery of goods and items to corps food pantry program as well as other transport related needs.
      8. Participate in facility housekeeping schedule.
      9. Participate in a schedule responding to after hour canteen call outs when no volunteers are available.
      10. Complete any additional assignments as assigned or needed by Director.



    • Two years of volunteer or volunteer management experience.
    • Valid Driver’s License and MVR clearance, and an ability to travel to multiple sites.
    • Must secure a class C truck driver’s license within 30 days of employment and meet all Department of Transportation driver’s requirements.
    • Must be Safe From Harm certified within 30 days of hire.


    • Knowledge of volunteer management.
    • Ability to develop plans to accomplish goals and objectives.
    • Knowledge of or willingness and aptitude to learn the concepts involved with EDS.
    • Demonstrated ability to use initiative and be a self-starter.
    • Ability to lead and supervise volunteer activities.
    • Positive attitude and the ability to be flexible in light of changing situations/priorities.
    • The ability to work as a team member.
    • Ability to work with confidential material.
    • Excellent communication (verbal/written) and interpersonal skills, using diplomacy and good judgment.
    • A “hands-on” knowledge of how to effectively work with diversity in the workplace.
    • Willing to promote the mission of The Salvation Army.


    • This position may be required to do light to heavy physical work, moving products in the warehouse.
    • In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position the employee is regularly required to use standard office equipment and computer.
    • This individual must be able to travel to a variety of sites in the Division.
    • The work environment for this position includes an office and warehouse environment with an average noise level.
