  • Overview

    Responsible for the overall functions of the family store, including staffing, policies, customer relations, and other functions necessary for the success of the store in supporting the programs of the Austin Corps. This position involves directing and teaching others to create and insure a neat appearing and safe store.


    • Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters and maintains positive relationships with co-workers and supervisors. This would include but not be limited to such actions: resolution of conflicts in a positive manner; courteous treatment of staff, clients and visitors; respect of others’ property and person, professional and appropriate communication to and about co-workers, supervisors and subordinates.     • Recruit, interview, and recommend hiring of potential employees to Corp Officer
    • Manage the Thrift Store operations efficiently and effectively, while maintaining the established SA policies and procedures.
    • Ensure proper training of all employees and volunteers and schedule clerks to ensure coverage of all scheduled hours.
    • Sign-off on all Thrift Store employee time cards and absentee slips and turn them in to the Office Manager biweekly.
    • Supervise Thrift Store employees in performance of their duties to ensure compliance with directives and guidelines.
    • Hold regularly scheduled meetings to ensure timely and effective communication, for team building and to keep personnel informed of new policies and directives.
    • Resolve conflicts and disagreements between employees and/or volunteers.
    • Deal with and provide good customer relations, as is expected of all staff.
    • Ensure proper handling of all cash and other assets. (Ensure that all deposits of store sales are made at the end of the business day. The store sales are to be counted with two unrelated staff members.)
    • Develop and maintain a system for evaluating, sorting, pricing and stocking to maximize sales.
    • Work with the Thrift Store Committee which includes advisory board members to review store operations.
    • Develop and implement a branding package for the retail store consisting of interior and exterior signage, public awareness, public perception, and revised marketing campaigns as needed.
    • Develop and implement new sources of donation opportunities, including local extension offices to expand the awareness and ideals of the Store.
    • Communicate with local groups to expand awareness of the store and The Salvation Army for promotional purposes as well as to expand donations and sales opportunities
    • Develop and foster relationships with other local thrift stores to new ideas and information with regards to store security and operations
    • Coordinate the stores participation with the applicable Corps programs
    • Engage in Corps events and activities that may or may not be within the scope of the store operations
    • Conduct store promotions to attract new customers and encourage repeat customers
    • Schedule all pick-up and deliveries related to store donations
    • Redesign the retail floor space as well as with all warehouse space to improve productivity, appearance, and sales
    • Develop partnerships with community leaders, businesses, and educational institutions to improve relations and to develop new contacts with regards to increased donations and increased sales
    • Watch for and prevent security risks and theft.
    • Maintain accurate sales, noting any sales trends and submit daily reports to the Corps Officer. Tickets, arranges and displays merchandise to promote sales.
    • Order merchandise and maintain accurate inventory of goods on hand.
    • Report safety hazards or potential OSHA violations to Corps Officer. Responsible for the protection of personnel, property and building.
    • Respond to customer complaints.
    • Monitor thrift store facilities, grounds, and equipment making proper decisions in regards to maintenance, repairs and upgrades as needed.
    • Facilitate all arrangements in regards to waste, cardboard removal, snow removal, and scheduling of the “rag out” program.
    • Perform all other duties as assigned.


    High School Diploma with a minimum of two years supervisory and retail management experience. Must have excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, the ability to work independently and/or in a team setting making good decision with minimal input from other staff. Self-motivated, and perform well with minimum supervision. Computer literate and be proficient in Word, Lotus Notes and Excel. Possess a positive attitude, works well with others, be trustworthy, especially in confidential matters and be well organized and efficient. Good written and verbal communication skills with customers, volunteers, staff, and supervisors. Must be able to pass The Salvation Army’s background checks, clerical screenings, and meet MVR drivers’ qualification. It must be understood by the incumbent that the provisions of Safe From Harm will apply upon commencement of employment and also understood that the required Safe From Harm training be satisfactorily completed within the first thirty (30) days of employment.
