    POSITION TITLE:                 Program Counselor   


    LOCATION/DEPT:                Tri-City/St. Charles Corps


    REPORTS TO:                       Youth Development Coordinator


    FLSA CATEGORY:                Non-Exempt


    STATUS TYPE:                     Flexible Part-Time



    Assist with the supervision of a full range of programs for all ages that meet the physical, spiritual and social needs in the Tri-City area. Must be willing to support all goals of The Salvation Army Tri-City Corps and its mission statement. Must feel comfortable in sharing the Christian Faith and in leading and participating in Christian education and evangelistic outreach programs.


    1. Assist with the supervision of a variety of recreational and character building programs for youth, adults and seniors.
      1. Inform members and visitors of rules concerning dress, conduct, and equipment and enforce rules.
      2. Eject unruly or unauthorized persons as necessary.
      3. Settle disputes between groups or individuals using the center.
    2. Maintain a number of records and reports.
      1. Salvation Army statistical reports.
      2. Records on memberships and program attendance.
      3. Incident and Accident reports.
    3. Maintain the Community Center, office area, storage area, computer lab, and game area in a reasonable order. Insure the safety and security of supplies and equipment.
      1. Maintain as needed for program changes to include room set up and tear down as well as cleaning when janitorial staff is not available.
    4. Participate in supervision and coordination of assigned activities related to recreational and community based programs.
    5. Assist with the supervision of a summer day camp program.
    6. Assist with the supervision of sports tournaments and coach sports teams for various tournaments.
    7. Develop a relationship with members and their families.
      1. Share the gospel and the message of salvation through Jesus Christ whenever appropriate.
      2. Lead devotionals and Bible study.
      3. Open activities with prayer.
    8. Provide for proper receipt and security of membership and participation funds received.
    9. Maintain Center security and security records.
      1. Patrol and inspect the facility to detect damage to building or equipment and to insure that rules are being enforced.
      2. Monitor computer and internet usage.
    10. All other duties as assigned



    • High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
    • An exposure to social services or faith-based organizations is preferred.


    • Must be computer literate.
    • Must hold or be willing to obtain CDL License to operate 30-40 passenger bus.
    • Fluency knowledge in conversational Spanish is preferred.
    • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to use initiative and be a self-starter.
    • An attention to detail.
    • A positive attitude and the ability to be flexible in light of changing job situations/priorities.
    • Willing to promote the mission of The Salvation Army.


    • This individual will only commit Army resources that have been allocated or approved.
    • This individual will keep the Youth Development Coordinator informed on all critical issues relating to their area of responsibility.
    • This individual will adhere to all policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position.


    • This position is required to do light to moderate physical work and must be able to lift 25 pounds. 
    • In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position the employee is regularly required to use office equipment, a PC, recreational equipment, and operate a vehicle.
    • The work environment for this position includes an office and gym environment with a low to high noise level.
    • Must be able to walk up and down stairs and operate a vehicle.  May need to drive in inclement weather.
