  • Overview

    Cleaning and grounds upkeep of The Salvation Army facility at 710 Pennsylvania Avenue. Assist in the grounds upkeep of The Salvation Army Day Care at 1125 N 13th Street. Provide basic maintenance such as changing light bulbs, painting, checking and cleaning filters, snaking and cleaning drains. Also, provide pick-up and delivery services for programs as needed.

    Custodian duties: 

    • Routine cleaning of all areas of facility following a regular schedule. 
    • Set-up rooms as required for all meetings. 
    • Receive and deliver goods/donations to proper place in building. 
    • Follow schedule for basic maintenance. 
    • Keep outside grounds and building clean and safe. Perform seasonal work such as snow shoveling, gardening and raking of leaves. 
    • Assist with seasonal programs. 
    • Assist with property upkeep at Quarters as needed. 
    • Provide Operations Supervisor with list of supplies to order related to building operation. 

    Driver duties: 

    • Picks up bakery and bread donations in accordance with established schedule. 
    • Picks up regular food donations from local restaurants and institutions. 
    • Picks up other donated or purchased items as directed. This includes but is not limited to regular pick-ups from Feeding America and special pick-ups from The Salvation Army ARC in Milwaukee. 
    • Performs specific pick-up and delivery tasks to support seasonal events such as Coats for Kids, Toys for Tots, Red Kettle Campaign, The Salvation Army Christmas program and all other Christmas donations and pick-ups. 
    • Delivers items that are picked up to assigned locations. 


    The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal education, experience, knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required for this position. 



    • High School Diploma or GED preferred but not required. 


    • Valid Wisconsin Driver's license with approval to drive from The Salvation Army's insurance carrier. 


    • Previous commercial cleaning experience is preferred. 


    • General education with ability to follow a work plan for cleaning a large facility according to high standards. 


    Knowledge of

    • Operating cleaning equipment such as a Kai Vac, mechanical floor scrubber, floor machine, burnisher and vacuum. 
    • Operating machinery for property upkeep such as a lawn mower, weed whacker, and snow blower. 
    • Providing basic maintenance such as changing light bulbs, painting, cleaning filters in mechanical systems, snaking and cleaning drains. 
    • Chemicals for cleaning and maintaining equipment. 
    • Stripping and waxing various types of floor.

    Ability to

    • Clearly and effectively communicate. 
    • Read and comprehend meters and other testing devices associated with daily building operations. 
    • Read and comprehend basic manuals related to custodial duties.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Ability to read and comprehend meters and other testing devices associated with daily building operations. Also needs to comprehend basic manuals related to custodial duties. 



    May operate motor vehicle to move among facilities and throughout the community. 


    Working Conditions: 

    Much of this job is performed indoors in normal room temperature conditions. When the duties require being outdoors, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate. By nature of this cleaning job a person is exposed to dirt, garbage, and dust and is expected to wear appropriate, protective clothing (provided by employee). At times the duties will involve working in situations exposed to infectious and/or communicable diseases.
