  • Overview

    Position will perform cash register duties, build positive customer relations and assist the Store Manager in daily operations of the store.

    • Stock racks, shelves, counters or tables with merchandise. 
    • Helps set up displays and arranges merchandise to promote sales. 
    • Remove unmarked items of merchandise to back room to be priced by manager. 
    • Assist with sorting donations and hanging of clothing as requested. 
    • Cleans shelves, counters, displays, and general store area. Clean debris and snow from sidewalk and related areas as requested. 
    • Operates cash register, accepting payment and making change. Wraps or bags merchandise for customers. 
    • Close and secure store as scheduled. 
    • Balance cash drawer for your shift and at end of day. Safeguard cash at all times. 
    • Perform phone duties. 
    • Responsible to maintain good customer relations by giving prompt, courteous assistance to customers. 
    • Receive donations and give proper receipt to donors. Assist with unloading the store truck. 
    • Attend staff and training meetings. 
    • Use back guard provided when doing any substantial lifting of moving. 
    • Responsible to follow the policies, guidelines, and procedures of The Salvation Army and governmental regulations. 
    • Support the mission statement of The Salvation Army. 
    • Other duties as assigned by supervisor. 


    The person in the position will maintain a close positive working relationship with the Store Manager, clerks, and volunteers. Additionally they will have a positive working relationship with customers, donors, and other Salvation Army staff both locally and at the Division level.

    • High School or GED 
    • Prior retail sales experience preferred. 

    Language Skills: 

    • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. 
    • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situation to customers, and other employees. 

    Reasoning Ability: 

    • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. 
    • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. 

    Clerical/Mathematical Skills: 

    • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. 
    • Ability to operate cash register. 

    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: 

    • Must be bondable. 

    Physical Demands: 

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk, reach with arms and hands, and stoop, kneel or crouch. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds (team lifting). Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to focus. 


    Work Environment: 

    This position works in a store environment with some temperature control and moderate noise levels.
