    The Music & Gospel Arts Coordinator is responsible to plan, coordinate, and organize the music component for weekly worship services based on general input from the Director of Corps Ministries and other persons involved in worship planning.  They are also responsible for all music programs, including vocal and instrumental, of the Harbor Light Center for both adult and youth.  The Music & & Gospel Arts Coordinator also provides program support for other areas of the Harbor Light Center Corps on a seasonal and as needed basis as directed by the Director of Corps Ministries.  As part of the Spiritual Leadership Team of the Harbor Light Center, the Music & Arts Coordinator must also be proficient in teaching the Word of God and leading Bible Study. This is a full-time position with a normal work week expectation of 40 hours, including Sundays, some evenings, and some Saturdays.



    Essential Duties:

    • Organize music components for weekly and special worship programs, including special music and participants in leading worship activities – prepare lyrics and submit to office staff for typing and printing (Proof read draft prior to printing), ensuring the lyrics match in the current worship software for projection.
    • Recruit and train volunteers to operate sound enhancement equipment during worship services and rehearsals
    • Lead and supervise volunteer leaders for all regular music groups including vocal and instrumental.
      • Plan and lead rehearsals
      • Provide and/or arrange transportation to and from rehearsals as needed
      • Instruct and educate groups and individuals in theory and technique as needed to promote improvement in performance
    • Plan and lead special worship and music events as directed by the Director of Corps Ministries, including Praise & Worship and other Corps events.
    • Promote and assist with registration and transportation of divisional and territorial music camps – attending camps as directed by the Director of Corps Ministries.
    • Compose or adapt musical selections for Corps groups or individuals as needed and as allowed by law.
    • Monitor and report copyrighted music use as required under the CCL agreement.
    • Record and report statistics for music programs.
    • Maintain current inventory of music program instruments and equipment.
    • Make recommendations to the Director of Corps Ministries concerning the purchase and selection of musical instruments, sheet music, and other related supplies.
    • Maintain instruments and equipment making arrangements for repair or replacement as needed.


    Additional Responsibilities

    • Assist with seasonal programs as assigned by Harbor Light Center Administrator and/or Director of Corps Ministries, including assisting with kettles.
    • Recruit and prepare substitutes during scheduled absences, in consultation with the Director of Corps Ministries.


    • Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters and maintains positive relationships with co-workers and supervisors.     • Other related duties as directed by the Director of Corps Ministries.


    Candidates seeking this position must be experienced and proficient in performing various genres of music. Undergraduate degree in music or music education preferred.


      Must have excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, the ability to work independently and/or in a team setting, computer literate and be proficient in Word, Lotus Notes and Excel. Must have evidence of experience in leading worship through music, music instruction and the ability to lead and work with children and adults.  Must be organized and self-directed with the ability to receive and interpret broad instructions related to planning and implementing music and worship programs.  Candidates seeking this position must be experienced and proficient in performing various genres of music.  The candidate must also be able and willing to work regular evening and weekend hours, be familiar with and support the overall mission of The Salvation Army and must have the ability to work and relate well with children, parents, and staff in a capacity of leadership and education. Must be able to pass The Salvation Army’s background checks, clerical screenings and meet the MVR drivers’ qualification.  The incumbent must be willing to support the Mission of The Salvation Army. It must also be understood by the incumbent that the position is subject to the requirements of Safe From Harm within the first 30 days of employment.
