    SUMMARY/PRIMARY PURPOSE: Prepares and cooks a variety of balanced meals for up to 50 people.



    1.Driving is an essential function of the position.

    2.Responsible for preparing nutritious meals for the Summer Lunch Program.

    3.Responsible for following FDA guidelines for meals and serving sizes.

    4.Responsible for cleaning food preparation areas, cooking surfaces, dishes/utensils/pans.

    5.Responsible to make sure trash from food preparation process is disposed of properly.

    6.Maintain sanitation and follow health and safety standards in work areas.

    7.Properly secure left-over food in refrigerators or freezers, label and date.

    8.Order and take delivery of supplies.

    9.Verify that prepared food meets requirements for quality and quantity.

    10.Wash, cut and prepare foods designated for cooking.

    11.Supervise and serve children and /or adults from the service window.

    12.Responsible to do the paperwork required monthly reimbursement.


    MARGINAL DUTIES: Other similar and related duties may be assigned.

    Must possess a valid driver's license from the state in which you reside.  Must be approved through The Salvation Army Fleet Safety Program to drive either a Salvation Army or personal vehicle on Salvation Army business.


    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  Supervises volunteers and/or Experience Works employees assigned to the kitchen.


    QUALIFICATIONS:  To perform this job successfully, and individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

    • Knowledge of cooking and food preparation procedures and methods which may require special techniques.
    • Ability to purchase food products cost effectively within budget guidelines.
    • Ability to establish priorities, work independently and proceed with objectives with little supervision.
    • Must demonstrate patience while working with small children.
    • Ability to act as a positive role model for youth in our programs.
    • Must be dependable and reliable.


    • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
    • 0-2 years’ experience working in food service.
    • Must obtain a Serve Safe Food Handlers Certificate

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:  Must obtain a Serve Safe Food Handlers Certificate and keep it current for the duration of the position.


    COMPUTER/PROGRAM SKILLS:  Must demonstrate basic computer skills for communication and research.  Or…Ability to operate a desk top computer.  Ability to access and produce information from a computer. Basic computer knowledge is needed to access time clock and personal information via a web-based system.


    OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:   Must pass all applicable background checks. 


    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis.  Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as kitchen appliance doors, drawers, etc.  Ability to lift and carry 25-40 pounds on a regular basis.  Example:  moving containers of food around the kitchen.


    WORK ENVIRONMENT:  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  Must be able to work with a moderate noise level in the kitchen (dish washer, multiple people working in a small area, etc.).
