House Manager/Security Supervisor

Supervision of House Management Staff; supervision of residents and property at The Emergency Lodge to ensure a safe environment for all residents. This position is primarily 2nd and 3rd shift, including some weekends.

  • Supervision of House Management Staff:
    • Provide direct supervision to the House Management Staff
    • Coordinate all aspects of scheduling the House Management Staff; including vacations, holidays, jury duty and sick time coverage. 
    • Provide training and in-service opportunities to House Management Staff. 
    • Conduct Performance Evaluations of House Management Staff. 
    • Meet on a regular scheduled basis with Emergency Lodge Director and House Management Staff. 
    • Be "on-call" as needed for call-ins and crisis intervention. 
    • Supervise Community Service Volunteers and process, including interview, training and work assignments. 
    • Conduct Service Point data entry information as coordinated by the Emergency Lodge Director. 
  • House Manager Duties & Responsibilities: 
    • Manage the front desk area, including handling phone calls, visitors and residents coming and going from the building. 
    • Check-in residents returning to the shelter after work or other approved absences from the premises. 
    • Maintain a log of significant events that occurred on your shift and share with on-coming staff. 
    • Secure, distribute as required, and chart resident medication and medical supplies. 
    • Conduct orientation and intake processes for new residents arriving during your shift. 
    • Make sure rooms are ready for occupancy for residents arriving after normal business hours. 
    • Conduct hourly walk-through of the entire building, including all stairwells. Document walk-through in the log book. 
    • Conduct resident room checks at curfew and document findings in the log book. 
    • Distribute bad and/or saved meals to residents according to sign-up sheet. Sign-up resident on saved meal request forms. 
    • Provide supervision of dining area during mealtimes, as needed. 
    • Conduct breathalyzer and urinalysis tests on residents arriving after curfew, as directed by Lodge Director, Assistant Lodge Director or Case Management staff or upon suspicion of drug/alcohol use. 
    • Perform general cleaning duties throughout the building, as needed or requested. 
    • Discharge residents as directed Document their departure and assist with the removal of their personal property. 
    • Participate in training programs and staff meetings. 
  • Safety & Security Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Assist Lodge Director with all aspects of building security. 
    • Maintain the Emergency Preparedness Plan and ensure all staff are trained in the implementation of the plan. 
    • Maintain working order of security cameras/system.
    • Assess safety/security needs of the building/program, make recommendations and implement approved changes in procedure. 
    • Maintain Incident Report system. 
    • Implement safety and security processes and procedures. 
    • Work together with all management staff to coordinate safety procedures. 
    • Work together with Maintenance Supervisor and Food Services Supervisor to maintain compliance with all building and safety codes and standards. 
    • Work together with Lodge Director to ensure compliance with Divisional Behavior Management Policy. 

Other responsibilities: 

  • Provides support for seasonal Social Services programs in Milwaukee County. 
  • Other duties as appropriate and assigned. 

Materials and Equipment: May use a variety of office equipment including a computer, telephone, fax machine, copiers, and printers. Also responsible for keeping the security camera system in working order. 


Education and Experience: 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, with one year college or two years experience in residential services or related field. 
  • Experience with AODA and/or mental health issues and clients preferred. 

Licenses and Certifications: Valid Wisconsin Driver's license with clearance to drive from The Salvation Army's insurance carrier. 


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Knowledge of:
    • De-escalation and crisis intervention techniques.
    • Computer applications related to the work including strong skills in Microsoft Word, Internet and e-mail. 
    • Record keeping principles and practices; correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation. 
    • Techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, in person and over the telephone.

  • Ability to:
    • Prepare clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials. 
    • Use initiative and independent judgement within established procedural guidelines; organize own work, set priorities and meet critical deadlines.
    • Established and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. 
    • Communicate effectively: orally, in writing and over the telephone.

Much of this job is performed indoors in normal room temperature conditions. When the duties require being outdoors, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
