  • Overview

    Perform janitorial work which could include all Salvation Army-Dane County properties with some light maintenance responsibilities.

    • Maintain repairs as prioritized by supervisor. 
    • Cleaning tasks at East Washington and Darbo Drive properties, which could include daily cleaning of client sleeping rooms. 
    • Moving furniture, donation barrels and other heavy objects. 
    • Trash and recycling disposal. 
    • Errands outside of buildings including clearing snow from sidewalks and applying ice melt to sidewalks and entry ways and picking up trash on properties. Mowing grassy areas on properties. 
    • Other duties as assigned by Maintenance or Property Director. 


    The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal education, experience, knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required for this position. 


    Education: High School Diploma preferred. 



    • Working knowledge of OSHA safety standards. 
    • Clearance by The Salvation Army insurance to drive. 


    • Flexibility to work weekends. 
    • Physical ability to perform required tasks. 
    • Ability to operate vehicles with standard transmission. 
    • Ability to work with community service volunteers. 
    • Ability to work independently. 
    • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. 


    • Experience working with janitorial equipment, including vacuums, floor scrubbers, buffers, etc. 
    • Experience stripping and waxing floors. 
    • Some basic knowledge of cleaning chemicals and how they react with each other. 
    • Some experience with basic electrical, plumbing, painting, etc. 
    • Basic knowledge of working with power equipment, such as lawn mowers, snowblowers, other gas/electric power tools.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, or kneel; talk and hear.     Much of this job is performed indoors in normal room temperature conditions. When the duties require being outdoors, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high. 


    At times the duties will involve working with individuals having infectious and/or communicable diseases.
