POSITION

Director of Sports & Recreation Programs

 

MISSION

The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center of Chicago exists to express the mission and ministry of The Salvation Army through a safe, enriching and sacred environment where all individuals have access to opportunities to reach their physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential.  The Vision of the Chicago Kroc Center is to touch individuals, families and seniors of the Southside with:  Community – Wellness – Excellence – Character – Faith

 

OUTCOMES

The Director of Sports & Recreation Programs is responsible for the ministry, growth and daily operations of the aquatics, gymnasiums, fitness center and all outside sports venues and fields.

Responsibilities

SPECIFIC DUTIES RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  1. As a member of the RJKCCC Management Team, schedule, direct, and guide all public, private, and in-house activities within the Sports & Recreation department.
    1. Develop a comprehensive program of sports, fitness and health by the creation of leagues, classes, organized activities and rentals that are based upon market demand.
    2. Create ministry links for individuals and families to be connected to Christian education, character building and worship as it relates to their interest in aquatics, sports and fitness (i.e. FCA, team bible studies, prayer before games, end of year banquets)
    3. Create and maintain an office support system that will allow for timely and accurate record keeping and statistical reports and other reporting related to all programs.
    4. Develop and effectively manage the annual budget related to the Sports & Recreation programs in coordination with the Business Director.
    5. In coordination with the Marketing Department, maintain clear channels of communication with staff, volunteers and program participants through memos, schedules, email, newsletters and personal discussion.
    6. Work cooperatively with community groups and local professional teams to develop mutually beneficial athletic programming.
  2. Staff Leadership
    1. Provide direct and indirect supervision to all full and part time staff within the Sports and Recreation department.
    2. Develop and implement training protocols to ensure employees are competent at their positions and committed to the mission of The Salvation Army.
    3. Develop and maintain new job descriptions for sports and recreation staff.
    4. Oversee staff scheduling in the sports and recreation department to ensure appropriate levels of coverage.
    5. Work in cooperation with Human Resources Generalist to process all personnel hire, change, and termination cases. 
    6. Perform departmental evaluations in a timely manner.
    7. Serve as a Manager on Duty (MOD) as assigned. 
  3. Meetings and Communication.
    1. Serve in a cooperative manner with the other on-site directors of the RJKCCC program.
    2. Collect and report all statistics, outcomes and evaluations related to sport and recreation programs.
    3. In coordination with the Marketing Department, develop new material, fund raisers or sponsorships that will attract new members and increase revenue with the goal of meeting financial objectives.
    4. Attend all scheduled department and leadership team meetings.
    5. Support other Kroc Center activities, programs and special events as deemed essential to the success of RJKCCC.
  4. Facilities/Safe Working Environment 
    1. Maintain a safe environment for participants and employees through the development and implementation of safety standards and guidelines, and the maintenance of equipment.
    2. Report and monitor maintenance and custodial concerns in a timely manner to ensure that equipment is in working order and the facility is clean and presentable.
    3. In coordination with the Facilities Director, establish an on-going preventative maintenance program for Sport and Recreation areas.
  5. Payroll
    1. Oversee the development of personnel schedules to ensure the sport and recreation areas and programs are properly staffed and employees do not consistently exceed the maximum hours approved for their status.
    2. Perform bi-weekly payroll functions to ensure employees are paid accurately and on time by following payroll procedures.
    3. Control and make adjustments to the departmental payroll to ensure that the personnel budget is met.
  6. Other Duties
    1. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Management, Recreation, Business or related field is required.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in sports and recreation programing.
  • Two years’ experience as a director of a sports facility or program component with an annual budget of at least $1 million for which they were responsible is preferred.
  • Have or obtain within three months, a valid Illinois Drivers’ License.  Safe from Harm, First Aid/AED/CPR certification or pass the same within 60 days of employment.  Pass The Salvation Army MVR application within 30 days.

LEADERSHIP ROLE

As a member of the Leadership Team, this position’s duties are integral to the accomplishment of the missions and objectives of the RJKCCC.  As a result this position must clearly understand the mission of The Salvation Army so that they can both articulate and advocate for the accomplishment of the Kroc Center’s mission and vision for the community.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position is required to do moderate physical work.  In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to use standard office equipment and a PC.  Also, they will have to be able to participate in play and carry sports equipment on occasion.  At times they will be expected to participate in community center activities.  The work environment for this position includes a community center environment with a medium to high noise level.  This employee may be required to drive at times.  Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs.
