Responsibilities

Job Purpose

The primary responsibility of this position is to respond to telephone calls from clients.  This position will be responsible for taking information from the client using our standard intake form and determining client eligibility for programs offered through The Salvation Army (Specifically Service Extension, Eastern Michigan Division).   This position will present a pleasant, articulate, neat appearance, and treat all clients with respect.  As an employee of The Salvation Army, your role is one of compassion, regardless of why the client is in need.  In addition, this position will file completed client files and maintain reports.  This position reports to the Director of Service Extension.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide emergency casework services, which include utilities, rent, shelter, food, seasonal needs, referrals, or other services as appropriate.
  • Interview, screen and record personal and financial data from social service applicants, make referrals.
  • Identify needs: evaluate and determine eligibility for grants/assistance according to policy governing eligibility; verify information given; recommend amount of assistance; initiate procedures to grant, modify, deny, suspend or terminate eligibility for assistance services.
  • Prepare vouchers and maintain accurate records of all funds used for assistance and gifts of any kind.
  • Become HMIS (Homeless Management Information System) trained and be able to prepare, update and maintain records and files of applicants and clientele on ServicePoint Database.
  • Work collaboratively with other social service agencies, churches, community resource centers and other organizations as necessary.
  • Work cooperatively with landlords, utility companies and other vendors.
  • Maintain current information regarding other community services that may benefit clientele.
  • Proficient in the operation of office equipment such as computers, calculators, copy machines, fax machines, and multiple line telephone systems.
  • Proficient in basic computer operation as well as being skilled in operating word-processing and spreadsheet programs (Microsoft® Office).
  • Store and retrieve client files and administrative files both hard copy and electronic.
  • Ability and willingness to promote and comply with the Mission Statement of The Salvation Army.
  • Read and agree with The Salvation Army handbook and maintain confidential information that is seen and discussed on a daily basis in the social service offices.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associated Degree with a minimum of two (2) years’ casework experience preferred.
  • Possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Possesses excellent organizational ability and skills.
  • Working knowledge of computer, including Microsoft Office, with the ability to electronically file, create and maintain databases, reports and informational flyers.

 

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to lift 40 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, reach and stoop.
  • Prolonged sitting.
