Overview

The teacher assistant role is to assist the Lead Teacher in providing a well structured environment that is at all times: 1) safe (all children must be within sight and hearing at all times), 2) directly supervise a group of children, assigning in the overall safety and ensure the overall quality of his/her experience, 3) warm, friendly and sensitive to the feelings and needs of others, 4) maximizing opportunities for developmental growth, 5) dedicated to providing the best possible care.

 

[This Job Description contains information for both the After School Program and Day Camp. It is understood that an employee MAY be involved in both programs, or just one program. The information for each program is specific and does not NECESSARILY pertain to both programs.]

Work Hours: Monday-Thursday 2:30pm-7:00pm during the school year, Monday –Friday 7:30am to 3:30pm (or 8am – 4pm) during the Summer Youth Day Camp Program.

Responsibilities

• Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters and maintains positive relationships with co-workers and supervisors. This would include but not be limited to such actions: resolution of conflicts in a positive manner; courteous treatment of staff, clients and visitors; respect of others’ property and person, professional and appropriate communication to and about co-workers, supervisors and subordinates. After School Duties: The Teacher Assistant’s role will be to assist the Lead Teacher in completing these responsibilities:

1. Tutor children in approved standard elementary-high school curriculum.
2. Develop and plan curriculum. This should include the Christian component through Bible stories, songs, prayers, etc. Create daily and weekly lesson plans to submit to the After School/Day Camp Coordinator.
3. Develop and follow an Individual Child Care Program Plan for each child assigned to your group.
4. Monitor child’s progress and document in the child’s records.
5. Follow the written “Behavior Guidance Policies and Procedures” for dealing with unacceptable behavior from children in the program.
6. Follow the guidelines as established in the “Rapid Response Guide” concerning Report or Observed Child Maltreatment, Physical Injury, Lost or Missing Children & Imminent Danger.
7. Work with children on the computer.
8. Monitor small groups during enrichment activities.
9. Assist with the safe transportation of program participant to and from the facility and on field trips by either acting as a driver or a vehicle monitor
10. Fill out daily attendance sheets
11. Submit any request for class supplies to the After School/Day Camp Coordinator.
12. Actively participate in all staff meetings and trainings.
13. Be responsible for working with the staff in our Hot Lunch Program to help serve the food safely and to meet standards in the CACFP Food program, ensuring that all forms are filled out correctly concerning the CACFP Food program.
14. Monitor the distribution of snacks and meals to children in the youth programs
15. Ensure that all guidelines are followed for the CACFP Food Program, i.e. supervising the children while they wash their hand, clean all tables before and after food is served, etc.
16. Prepare and maintain a clean classroom and appropriate materials for age group.
17. Utilize our “do not serve guidelines” and the “student behavior expectation sheet” to properly re-direct and re-teach our youth.
18. Prepare a pre-test and test for each academic semester to log into our After School Program database.
19. Assist with the safe transportation of program participant to and from the facility and on field trips by either acting as a driver or a vehicle monitor
20. Perform a variety of miscellaneous duties and responsibilities within the scope of this job description as requested from time-to-time by authorized management representatives.

 

Day Camp Duties: The Teacher Assistant’s role will be to assist the Lead Teacher in completing these responsibilities:

1. Facilitate elementary youth in a classroom setting, preparing activities and small daily lesson plans. This should include the Christian component through Bible stories, songs, prayers, etc.
2. Assist with Vacation Bible School during the designated week—using the material provided to provide Bible Lessons to children as directed by Corps Officers.
3. Follow the written “Behavior Guidance Policies and Procedures” for dealing with unacceptable behavior from children in the program.
4. Follow the guidelines as established in the “Rapid Response Guide” concerning Report or Observed Child Maltreatment, Physical Injury, Lost or Missing Children & Imminent Danger.
5. Work with children on the computer.
6. Monitor and facilitate small groups during enrichment activities.
7. Be responsible for working with the staff in our Hot Lunch Program to help serve the food safely and to meet standards in the SFSP program, ensuring that all forms are filled out correctly concerning the SFSP program.
8. Prepare and maintain a clean classroom and appropriate materials for age group.
9. Utilize our “do not serve guidelines” and the “student behavior expectation sheet” to properly re-direct and re-teach our youth.
10. Monitor youth off-campus in various locations, ensuring the safety and appropriate behaviors of our youth. Actively participate/interact with children during the outings.
11. Assist with the safe transportation of program participant to and from the facility and on field trips by either acting as a driver or a vehicle monitor
12. Monitor the distribution of snacks to children in the youth programs

Qualifications

High School Diploma with some previous experience working with children with the ability to tutor elementary aged children. The Teacher Assistant must have a warm, friendly personality, be sensitive to the feelings and needs of others, be able to relate well with young children, and be willing to fulfill job responsibilities in accordance with the program plan and objectives. The Teacher Assistant must also be comfortable with The Salvation Army Mission Statement. The Teacher Assistant must be able to maintain a professional attitude towards the children, the families, and other staff members at all times, and be able to communicate professionally and openly. The Teacher Assistant must be a model, demonstrating the kinds of values, attitudes, expectations, beliefs, and choices that make our program excellent!! It must be understood by the incumbent that the provisions of Safe From Harm will apply upon commencement of employment and also understood that the required Safe From Harm training be satisfactorily completed within the first thirty (30) days of employment. Must pass the background check, possess a valid drivers’ license and meet the MVR drivers’ qualification. Must demonstrate or develop proficiency in driving a large 12 passenger van.
