The Volunteer and Events Coordinator will maintain existing relationships with current volunteers and develop ongoing strategies to increase the use of volunteers in the daily activities and varied ministries of The Salvation Army in Kalamazoo County.  The Volunteer and Events Coordinator will also coordinate, communicate and plan normal annual events working with the departments which will benefit from the event and to create new event opportunities for visibility which will benefit the work of The Salvation Army in our community. 



Volunteer Coordination

Develop and implement a plan for recruitment and retention of volunteers
Develop and modify volunteer position descriptions as needed.
Process all volunteer applications and background checks as appropriate for volunteer activity.
Provide orientation, training, education and supervision of volunteers as needed.
Maintain and monitor the online Volunteer Impact management system.
Work with the staff to develop a plan for recognition of volunteers.
Build relationships with community partners (colleges, churches, businesses, and service clubs, etc.) to provide for future volunteer opportunities.
Solicit volunteers for existing programs (Community Center/Social Services/EDS), for our community events (Toy Shop/Coat Distribution/Postal Food Drive, etc.).
Provide ways to encourage and thank volunteers for their service, and provide opportunities for volunteers to evaluate and give feedback for services rendered.  

Community Events Coordination

Develop events which will promote The Salvation Army in the community by creating a comprehensive plan, budget, and a working committee to follow through from idea to event.
Work effectively with others to plan and organize annual events (National Salvation Army Week, Volunteer Recognition Dinner, VA Stand-down, etc.) and future events.


Experience: Minimum of 1 year experience in volunteer coordination.


Skills: Ability to communicate with people effectively, both written and face-to-face contacts.  The individual needs to possess strong organizational and people skills, and must be a team player.  Conflict management skills and detail orientation are musts.  This person must be self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision with the ability to multi-task. The incumbent must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and become proficient with the volunteer based software.
