Overview

Maintains the fleet in safe operational condition by performing the following duties.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain trucks/service vehicles in accordance with DOT requirements.
  • Maintain garage in accordance with MIOSHA safety requirements.
  • Repair all motorized equipment.
  • Assist in documenting truck pre-trip and post-trip reports with truck drivers.
  • Know how to properly and safely operate a box truck.
  • Give priority to the care of trucks and other motor vehicles and trailers. Report to supervisor any mechanical problems and seek recommendation and approval for any work necessary.
  • Report evidence of excess damage or abuse of equipment to supervisor.
  • Perform service and keep records on each truck or vehicle.
  • Perform preventative maintenance as listed in the Warehouse Manager-in-Training manual.
  • Check trailers for needed repairs as soon as they are pulled in to ensure trailer is ready for use when unloaded. Keep record of trailer repairs.
  • When necessary, drive truck or vehicle.
  • Responsible for the safety and security of vehicles and garage equipment.
  • Know how to properly and safely operate a pallet jack.
  • Maintain neat and orderly work area. The entire area and equipment should be free of grease oil, soiled rags, etc. waste rags should be kept in fire proof receptacle. Rag receptacle emptied into dump truck in morning (greasy waste should not be put into compactor).
  • Communicate to supervisor the need to purchase parts.
  • Check tires for proper wear and rotation.
  • Maintain proper care and security of equipment, tools and parts, locking work area when leaving.
  • Control work area so that no unofficial vehicles are repaired on premises and on company time an vehicles are not taken for use for other than Salvation Army business.
  • Take reports on need for repairs from all drivers, but commence work only upon instruction and approval of supervisor.
  • Check radios and make known need for repair to supervisor.
  • Maintain all vehicles to safe operating level, make sure equipment on vehicles meet legal standards.
  • In emergencies be willing to work overtime and/or start work early to complete necessary repairs.
  • Use personal protective equipment in all required areas.
  • Report safety hazards and ensure proper use, care and maintenance of equipment.
  • Use back guard provided when doing any substantial lifting or moving.
  • Support the mission statement of The Salvation Army.

OTHER DUTIES

All tasks or assignments as assigned by supervisor or administrator. Responsible for adhering to all procedures and guidelines as outlined in the Warehouse Manager-in-Training manual.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Mechanic experience preferred, in both gasoline and diesel engines.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Read and understand English. Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports. Ability to speak effectively to employees of work area.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

CLERICAL/MATHEMATICS SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Driver’s License, Chauffer’s License preferred

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit, drive and stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and hear, see or talk. The employee is frequently required to walk and reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly exposed to a garage type environment with a moderate noise level and gasoline/oil smells. It can be exposed to outside weather.
