Assure the efficient and effective functioning of the Housing Access for Washtenaw County (HAWC) program. Provide crisis intervention and assist households who are facing a housing crisis. Provide case management support services to help at risk households remain stably housed.


1) Provision of eviction prevention financial assistance to families and individuals in the county services area.
(a) Receive referrals from Housing Access for HAWC for households who are in need of eviction prevention assistance.
(b) Assures that assessments are completed within 48 hours of receiving referral.
(c) As needed, coordinate referrals to other TSA casework staff.
(d) Request financial assistance through Barrier Busters, or other available resource, for households that qualify for eviction prevention assistance.
(e) Responsible for becoming knowledgeable and familiar with local housing resources, local landlords, and low income properties in Washtenaw County.

2) Responsible for provision of casework services.
(a) Conduct client interviews and assess needs, review client budget and, when appropriate, make financial management recommendations.
(b) In partnership with consumer, develop and monitor Housing Plans and provide follow up services to households receiving financial assistance.
(c) Network with other social service agencies in the community to establish and maintain good interagency working relationships.
(d) Advocate for the on-going needs of the clients and provide referrals to other mainstream community resources such as mental health, the Department of Human Services (DHS), Social Security, DTE, etc.
(e) Completes all necessary paperwork thoroughly and on a timely basis. Ensure that client files are up to date with all required documentation recorded in the file.
(f) Perform data entry of client records in Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) Service Point in “real time”.

3) Provide back up services to HAWC.
(a) Respond to callers on the HAWC, assessing initial needs and making appropriate referrals.
(b) Respond to walk ins who are facing a housing crisis, assessing initial need, conducting intake screening and providing appropriate referrals.
(b) Participates in agency program meetings and community meetings such as the Housing Resource Team.

4) Participates in required initial and ongoing training as directed by program guidelines and/or agency requirements.


The Washtenaw County HRS Caseworker is accountable to the HAWC Coordintor, Director of Social Services and the Washtenaw County Commanding Officer. The caseworker is expected to carry out his/her duties responsibly and in a manner that is in compliance with the ministry and purpose of The Salvation Army. Above all, the caseworker is to represent The Salvation Army within the community in such a manner as to insure utmost recognition and support.

A bachelor’s degree in a relevant social services field is required. Applicant must be flexible and able to function well under extreme pressure. Applicant must be able to function within the spiritual objectives of The Salvation Army understanding that The Salvation Army mission is to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs without discrimination

Position is non exempt
This is a part time 20 hours per week position. Business hours are 8:30 to 5:00 Monday through Friday, however, weekends and evenings may be required. While this position will be based at the Ann Arbor Corps, the HRS caseworker will be required to provide coverage as needed to HAWC.
