Overview

Acquires the skill to manage a thrift store during a 15-week training program, outlined in the Store Manager-in-Training manual. After successful completion of all cost centers in the training program, should be able to perform the following duties personally or through subordinate staff.

Responsibilities

  • Learn all functions of every cost center through on the job training and daily reading of the Manager-in-Training manual.
  • Assist in the supervision of all store personnel and beneficiaries in performance of duties to ensure compliance with directives and guidelines when directed by Store Manager.
  • Assist with the training for new personnel when directed by Store Manager and/or Store Supervisor.
  • Must use communication log daily for in-store communication during frontend and opening/closing training.
  • Conduct Target Point meetings in absence of manager during opening and closing weeks of training.
  • Be able to properly open and close the store on any shift required in the hours of operation once trained.
  • Must check emails daily and use computer for interoffice communication once email address is issued.
  • Must be able to apply all policies and procedures as listed in the Store Manager-in-Training manual and enforce guidelines.
  • Bank cash receipts at end of business day, send deposit slips to the accounting office each day. Safeguard cash at all times, and uphold Salvation Army money handling policies and procedures.
  • Attend regular staff meetings and keep personnel informed. Assist in implement new policies and directives.
  • Maintain good customer and donor relations, as is expected of all staff.
  • Ensure the proper rotation of product as instructed.
  • Order merchandise through the warehouse or Store Supervisor and maintain accurate inventory of goods on hand, at all times when directed by Manager on Duty.
  • Price unmarked items of merchandise once trained.
  • Report safety hazards. Responsible for the protection of personnel, property, and building at all times.
  • Must stay up to date on Consumer Product and Safety Commission rules, regulations and recalls.
  • Report to Manager any detrimental behavior by store personnel.
  • If and when necessary, issue disciplinary action to store personnel.
  • Responsible for Safe from Harm.
  • Must have reliable transportation and a valid Driver’s License.
  • Be prepared for reassignment to other stores within 35 miles at the direction of a Store Supervisor.
  • Use back guard provided when doing any substantial lifting or moving.
  • Support the mission statement of The Salvation Army.

OTHER DUTIES

All tasks or assignments as assigned by a supervisor or administrator. Responsible for adhering to all procedures and guidelines as outlined in the Store Manager-in-Training manual.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervises store personnel and beneficiaries in absence of manager once trained. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Salvation Army policies and applicable laws.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school graduate or equivalent, experience in retail sales.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Read and understand English. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and employees.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

CLERICAL/MATHEMATICS SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Ability to operate a cash register. Ability to operate a computer.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must be bondable.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. The employee is frequently required to walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; and stoop, kneel or crouch. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus and see color.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment for this position is typically a store setting with limited temperature control but can be exposed to outside weather. The noise level is moderate.
