The Salvation Army Social Services Food Pantry Assistant supports the functioning of the pantry. The Pantry Assistant will stock pantry storage areas, pack food orders for clients, maintain cleanliness of all storage areas and equipment, and assist with the acquisition of food items. The Pantry Assistant will provide additional support to staff as needed.


Specific Functions:


Move food supplies between storage and pantry areas:


Unload, sort, and store food orders from loading dock.

Make sure pantry area is fully stocked using supplies from storage areas, donation drop offs, etc.

Assist with quarterly commodities delivery.

Pick up food orders and donations as necessary.



Unpack and stock pantry items:


Place food and personal care items in their designated areas.

Maintain organization of food storage areas.

Utilize food safety guidelines to determine shelf life of food and dispose of old food as necessary.

Utilize food safety guidelines when repackaging food items.

Inventory items on hand.


Pack pantry orders:


Provide food pantry clients with food orders based on their household size that meet their dietary needs. 

Utilize food safety guidelines when handling food. 

Maintain confidentiality of pantry clients.

Assist clients with bringing food items to vehicles as requested.


Maintain general upkeep and cleanliness of the pantry area:


Wipe down all surfaces and equipment as necessary.

Sweep floor as necessary.

Take out trash and cardboard as necessary.

Breakdown boxes.

Record temperatures for refrigerator and freezers weekly.




Education: High school diploma or equivalent.


Experience:  No work experience required.       


Skills:  Basic understanding of issues facing people in poverty. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to lift 45 pounds.  Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
