This is a cross-functional position that works through out the store as assigned.  The Mission of the Salvation Army Thrift Store is to courteously provide competitively priced donated items for sale within our community, to support programs that assist community members in need.  Thrift Store Clerks and other Store employees are the face of the Salvation Army Thrift Stores to the community.  Employees are expected to be honest, helpful, and courteous in the performance of all duties, such that the behaviors enhance the ability of the Salvation Army to accomplish its mission.

 

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

Assisting customers, sorting/pricing items, receiving donations, setting up the store, operating the cash register, bagging, assisting the managers and Corps Officers and other duties as needed.

 

Specific Functions:

Be responsible for assisting the Thrift Store Manager or Assistant Manager in the opening and/or closing of the store whenever necessary.

 

Be familiar with clothes to be able to sort the sellable clothes from those that are not.  Properly dispose or disposition items that will not be sold at the Store.

 

Ensure proper sorting, hanging, straightening and rotation of clothes and other store merchandise.

 

Be familiar with merchandise pricing.  Be able to determine the value, competitive pricing and optimal/pleasing display of donated items on the sales floor to move them to sale. 

 

Greet customers and offer assistance upon their entering the Store.  Willingly and courteously assist customers with questions and concerns in a timely manner.

 

Monitor the sales floor to ensure adequate supplies are stocked on the shelves and the clothes racks are full.

 

Be able to accurately operate a cash register and perform all cashier related duties.  Monitor the sales counter to ensure adequate supplies of bags and associated supplies are on hand to properly secure purchased items.

 

Must be able to work well with others and be able to help train and coordinate volunteers and other staff on assigned duties as needed.

 

Must be physically able to assist in lifting heavy objects, be able to assist other Store employees with furniture and appliance loading and unloading, placement on the sales floor, etc.

 

Ensure the sales floor, break room, cashier and dressing room areas are kept clean, inviting to customers, organized, and swept/mopped.

 

Maintain a safe and professional work environment, both inside and outside of the building. When needed, help maintain the building and grounds to include such activities as raking, snow shoveling or any other duty that adds to the safety and comfort of the customer during the shopping experience.

 

Other duties as needed and/or assigned.

Supervisors, Corps Officers, other team members

Qualifications

Prior successful retail experience highly desired. 

Some experience in second hand pricing a plus.

Detail oriented self starter.

Have an energy and enthusiasm for helping people. Need to have the ability to communicate with other co-workers and Corps Officers.

Accuracy in cash handling.

Excellent organizational skills including ability to multi-task.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Ability to interact with co-workers and the public in a positive manner.

Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and circumstances, and maintain confidentiality with customers and clients.

Ability to deal calmly and effectively with high stress situations.

Adherence to The Salvation Army’s “Protecting the Mission – Safe from Harm” policy and all Child Safety guidelines.

Good problem solving skills.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, and assist in lifting, moving, loading or unloading heavier items.

Hours may vary; some Saturdays will be required.
