  • Overview

    Assist in the implementation of the prisoner pre-release life skills program. The coordinator is responsible for the planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities. The coordinator is responsible for performing assigned duties during the day, evening, and/or weekends


    *This position is part-time, 15 hours per week, and is based out of Ellsworth, KS*


    • Coordinate, plan, organize, and instruct life skills courses
    • Participate in program and curriculum review and development and student learning outcomes initiatives
    • Ensure each program/class contains essential curricular components, has appropriate content and pedagogy
    • Plan each unit or lesson, both as to content and method, to make each class minute meaningful
    • Organize each course taught into an effective instrument of learning
    • Assist with inmate pre-registration and registration of life skills program
    • Ensure that assigned classes are held as scheduled
    • Teach all classes according to an approved course syllabus
    • Keep students informed and updated concerning course content, requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance requirements
    • Provide students with a mid-term progress report
    • Submit failure to report, early warning, notification of unofficial withdrawal, and other documentation when appropriate
    • Conduct class evaluations and complete other Salvation Army and department of corrections evaluations in accordance with policy
    • Recommend textbooks and other instructional materials including classroom equipment to Divisional Corrections Director
    • Secure statistical data on number of classes and number of participants in class
    • Meet weekly with the Divisional Correctional Services Director for progress report and next steps for program and implementation
    • Submit required reports to the appropriate personnel
    • Become thoroughly familiar with and comply with all Salvation Army and Kansas Department of Corrections policies and procedures




    • Associates degree or equivalent


    • 3 years experience as a program coordinator/instructor or equivalent
    • Minimum of 3-5 years working closely with inmates
    • Experience facilitating life skills curriculum or similar curriculum
    • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Suite



    • Conversant with and supportive of The Salvation Army Mission and purpose
    • Excellent organizational skills
    • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
    • Must have ability to work independently and with other staff members
    • Ability to relate to people. Demonstrated ability to be non-judgmental in approach, allowing others their right to self-determination, and to treat all with dignity and respect
    • Must have an interest and ability to work with people of diverse racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds in a sensitive and culturally appropriate manner
    • Ability to solve complex problems, make appropriate judgments and decisions

    • Ability to speak and understand English in a manner that is sufficient for effective communication with supervisors, employees, and inmates
    • Must exhibit emotional control and stability
    • Must possess stress management and coping skills

    Physical requirements include:

    • Sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or occasional continuous basis
    • Grasp, push, pull objects such as reference materials, files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead
    • Operate telephone and other electronic communication devices
    • Operate various other office equipment including personal computers, copiers, fax machines, and scanning equipment
    • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. occasionally
    • Ability to travel via car
