The Health and Fitness Manager will provide oversight for the daily operations of the health and fitness spaces of the facility.  Responsibilities include programming, staffing, operations and safety of the sports and fitness spaces. This includes the group exercise spaces, weight and cardio spaces, indoor track, storage areas, consultation rooms, and associated mechanical spaces.  This position is a key member of the program team and serves under the direction of the Program Director.

Responsibilities

  1. Manage daily operations of all health and fitness facilities, programs, events and equipment.
  2. Recruit, train and supervise all health and fitness employees, independent contractors and volunteers.
  3. Develop and implement safety policies and procedures for the health and fitness areas of the facility.
  4. Develop and implement programming specific to the health and fitness areas of the facility.
  5. Develop and manage the short and long range planning process for all health and fitness programs with attention to the implementation of a visionary plan for growth and increased program attendance and revenue.
  6. Ensure that the ultimate goal of spiritual, emotional and physical regeneration of all people is represented and infused in all programs, trainings, customer relations, and levels of operation.

 

 

  1. Specific Functions

 

  1. Manage daily operations of the health and fitness facilities, programs, events and equipment.
    1. Will give oversight to the day-to-day operations of health and fitness programs and facilities.
    2. Assist in the development of usage (rental) agreements for outside groups and private instructors who wish to rent health and fitness venues. Be willing to answer questions and give tours to prospective groups and/or individuals.
    3. Maintain an accurate calendar of events and daily schedule of the health and fitness programs and facilities usage by private and on site programs.
    4. Responsible for monitoring and documenting the use of all equipment and health and fitness spaces.
    5. Maintain a comprehensive inventory of all supplies and equipment.
    6. Work with the Facilities Director and together prescribe preventative maintenance and scheduling of weekly, monthly and annual cleaning of the health and fitness amenities.

 

 

  1. Recruit, train and supervise all health and fitness employees, independent contractors and volunteers.
    1. Recruit, hire, train, evaluate and schedule health and fitness staff and volunteers according to TSA and Kroc Center guidelines assuring safety and fiscal responsibility. This may also include the development and revision of current and future job descriptions. 
    2. Give supervision to health and fitness support staff, including personal trainers, groups exercise instructors, attendants and volunteers. This includes maintaining staff certifications and training documentation. The Health and Fitness Manager is responsible for maintaining safe ratios and best practice standards, including adhering to the Safe From Harm guidelines and child abuse reporting procedures at all times.
    3. Maintain clear channels of communication with staff, volunteers and program participants. This will include writing of internal memos, weekly department meetings, work schedules, program schedules, flyers, newsletters, one-on-one discussions and monthly in-service training.
    4. Work with Human Resources to ensure health and fitness staff maintain current certifications, including (but not limited to) CPR, First Aid, and instructor certifications.
    5. Conduct health and fitness staff in-service training, audits and certifications as required, including evaluations of employees and recommendations for career path and commensurate goals and objectives.

 

 

  1. Develop and implement safety policies and procedures for the health and fitness areas of the facility.
    1. Establish and implement safety guidelines and policies for all health and fitness areas, programs and equipment incorporating prevention measures which will include the development and implementation of risk assessments into all health and fitness program and areas.
    2. Ensure that liability injuries are reported and tracked in a timely fashion and according to RJKCCC policy and procedure.
    3. Maintain a safe working environment by using sound judgment and report all harmful problems with facilities to the Facilities Director for handling.
    4. Work with the Program Director and coordinators in the development of program health and safety. This will include the development and overseeing of risk assessments for programs and program areas.
    5. Work with the Operations and Program Directors in the preparation and training of a written Emergency Action Plan and the preparation, training and implementation of a Standard Operating Procedure for the health and fitness venues.
    6. Report any suspicion of child abuse to the appropriate supervisor according to established guidelines, Kroc Center policy, and state laws.

 

 

  1. Develop and implement programming specific to the health and fitness areas of the facility.
    1. Work with the Program Director, Program Development Officer and Youth Development Officer in the development and monitoring of all programs relevant to the health and fitness facilities.
    2. Programming of all health and fitness spaces will include but are not limited to: group exercise, circuit training, fitness orientation, personal training, health consultations and other related programs. The position will also work with the other “programmers” in the building to integrate as many different aspects of the facility into as many health and fitness programs and health and fitness spaces as possible. All programs will be developed under the Saint Joseph Kroc Program Development model and will incorporate The Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets.
    3. Establish and maintain under staff supervision an equipment checkout program. This program will include checks before and after use for defects, repair, etc. and discard / replace defective equipment in accordance with established procedures. See that all equipment assigned to the health and fitness venues is maintained and properly inventoried on a regular basis.  Develop and implement a replacement schedule with review of the Operations and Program Directors.
    4. Work closely with the Kroc Center Membership Manager to promote the health and fitness programs and maintain good public relations.

 

 

  1. Develop and manage the short and long range planning process for all health and fitness programs with attention to the implementation of a visionary plan for growth and increased program attendance and revenue.
    1. Responsible for designing, implementing, organizing, administering and evaluating programs for the health and fitness area also including securing outside groups, rentals and programs to best utilize the facility throughout all open hours. This may include partnerships with area schools, home school association and special needs groups.
    2. In the evaluation of programs, provide operating statements and reports, proposals for fee structures; maintain detailed record system by collecting, assembling and analyzing data, and preparing reports as required.
    3. Maintain program budget and reports with the direction of the Operations and Program Directors.
    4. Create and maintain with the Operations Director an office support system that will allow for timely and accurate recordkeeping, including the areas of statistical reports, record of volunteer activity, accounting of expenditures, and other reporting as required.
    5. Assist with the annual budget preparation of the health and fitness program and facilities of the RJKCCC. Give input as needed and be available to give answers about expenditures and other fiscal related matters concerning health and fitness programs and facilities.

 

 

  1. Ensure that the ultimate goal of spiritual, emotional and physical regeneration of all people is represented and infused in all programs, trainings, customer relations, and levels of operation.
  2. Create and maintain an inviting environment for the community at large.
  3. Ensure the seamless integration of all the health and fitness area into the facility as a whole and being able to coordinate what is taking place in that portion of the building along with the rest of the building so as to avoid schedule overlap and exceeding facility capacity.
  4. Update job knowledge to remain current with health and fitness trends, techniques, equipment and government regulations.
  5. Assist in providing staff support to the Executive Council and other related committees as assigned.

 

 

  1. Expectations

 

  1. Take the lead in developing and implementing safety and risk management policies and procedures for all health and fitness spaces and programs.

 

  1. Meet regularly with the Program Director to coordinate operational issues with sound fiscal and budgetary requirements.

 

  1. Work in a cooperative manner with the other on-site managers of the RJKCCC campus, discussing any problems that may be occurring within the facilities in which their programs operate.

 

  1. Attend all scheduled staff meetings and leadership team meetings when required.

 

  1. Follow and ensure adherence to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures.

 

  1. Perform other assignments/duties as directed.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelors Degree in a relevant field, or equivalent experience.

 

  1. 3 + years management experience in health and fitness setting with progressive levels of responsibility in developing, planning, managing, and supervising health and fitness facilities and programs. Must be able to assist, develop, and administer budgets, planning, staff development, membership service, and community relations.

 

  1. Current First Aid, CPR and AED required, instructor certification preferred.

 

  1. Professional etiquette, initiative, creativity, organization, delegation, communication and group/teamwork skills in a spirit of cooperation and Christian service.

 

  1. Demonstrated ability to effectively manage customer service through building a positive relationship with members and guests.

 

  1. Demonstrated ability to effectively work with children, parents, customers, staff and volunteers in a capacity of leadership, counseling and education.

 

  1. Ability to lead and develop a high capacity staff team.

 

  1. Proficient with standard word and spreadsheet processing and database software applications.

  1. Clearance of background check.

 

  1. Ability to lift and carry 20 lbs.

 

  1. Valid Driver’s license and reliable transportation.

 

  1. Spanish language proficiency preferred, but not a requirement.
