POSITION TITLE:        Head Swim Coach

 

LOCATION/DEPT:       Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center - Chicago

 

REPORTS TO TITLE:   Aquatics Management

 

Mission

Outcomes

 Under the direction and supervision of the Aquatics Manager the Head Swim Coach is to provide leadership, professional knowledge, and athletic development to The Salvation Army Mighty Kroc (SAMK) Swim club participants.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific responsibilities and expectations include but are not limited to the following:

 

  1. Primary
    1. Maintain standards in the Aquatics area that ensures the most enjoyable experience for all RJKCCC guests.
    2. Ensure proper coaching techniques are being taught.
    3. Organize and facilitate swim meets
    4. Supervise assistant coaching staff, including organizing and overseeing the workouts and coaching schedule and ensuring that the weekly workouts are staffed on an ongoing basis by qualified coaches
    5. Stay abreast of all new standards according to usaswimming.org
    6. Foster a welcoming environment for new swimmers with the goal of retaining swimmers who attends trial practices.
    7. Enforce the posted pool rules and regulations
    8. Be an integral party in recruitment efforts of the swim club externally to improve census of swim club.
  2. Program
    1. Prepare workouts in advance taking into account the varying skill levels of the swimmers and feedback from the swimmers, coaches, and aquatic managers to make adjustments as needed, and ensuring workouts are clearly communicated to the swimmers by the coaching staff
    2. Develop a training cycle taking into consideration the varying levels of commitment and goals of both non-competitive and competitive swimmers
    3. Ensure all practice changes, pool closures, upcoming activities, and competitions are communicated to swimmers by email and or at practice.
    4. Recruit and supervise assistant coaches and volunteer staff.
  3.  Administrative
    1. Maintain attendance and records.
  4. Work with aquatic managers to schedule RJKCCC home swim competitions, stroke clinics, annual swim-a-Thon fundraiser, and inter-squad meets and similar events.
  5. Manage relationship and serve as primary liaison with parents on behalf of SAMK and in consultation with Aquatics Management to address any facility and maintenance issues and ensure limited disruption in the workout schedule.
  6. Provide a monthly report to the aquatic managers.
  7. Oversee SAMK equipment needs; coordinate ordering of SAMK merchandise.
  8. Ensure all team members are registered with USA swimming.
  9. Ensure all coaching staff have required training and certification per SAMK and USA swimming requirements.
  10. Follow and ensure adherence to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures.
  11. Report all harmful problems with facilities to the Aquatics Manager.
  12. Ensure injuries are reported timely and according to procedure and generate a legible and accurate accident and incident reports as required.
  13. Coordinate response and direction to members in emergency situations.
  14. Maintain a sense of professionalism in aquatic areas.
  15. Other duties as assigned.

 Communication

  1. Be the conduit between RJKCCC and Swim Club Parents.
  2. Formulate, distribute and collect participant & parent evaluation for each season.
  3. Schedule and facilitate swim coaches meetings to ensure that all coaching staff understand their responsibilities in conjunction with Aquatics Management.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Under the general supervision of the Aquatics Manager with some freedom to plan, schedule and carry out responsibilities within established guidelines.

 

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS

This individual will be evaluated on how effectively the outcomes of this position are achieved, as well as the timeliness, accuracy and completeness of accomplishing assigned goals.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • BA or BS in Sports recreation related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 1year experience coaching a sanctioned U.S.A. age group level swim club.
  • Must secure and maintain all required USA swimming coaching certifications.
  • Lifeguard/Adult CPR/First Aid certification required (Water Safety Instruction certified preferred)
  • Must be Safe from Harm certified within 30 days of HIRE.

 COMPETENCIES

  • Competitive swimming experience and strong knowledge of stroke-mechanics governed by USA Swimming.
  • Demonstrated experience effectively coaching both competitive and recreational swimmers
  • Maintain a professional demeanor, provide leadership, and exhibit a positive, team-building attitude.
  • Encourage the SAMK mission of promoting community physical fitness, personal achievement, friendship, and fun through recreational and competitive swimming
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must have the ability to swim with proficiency and endurance in all four competitive strokes.
  • Ability to relate joyfully and sensitively to children of all ages.
  • Ability to use appropriate positive discipline consistently.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position is required to do light to heavy physical work. In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position the employee is regularly required to use equipment used in an aquatics program. This individual must be able to lift and carry 40 pounds.  The work environment for this position includes an office and outdoor/pool environment with a low to high noise level.

REQUIRED APPAREL

Person hired must wear standard apparel as prescribed by the Assistant Pool Manager.
