POSITION TITLE:                 Dance Instructor

 

LOCATION/DEPT:                Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center

 

REPORTS TO (TITLE):        Performance & Visual Arts Manager

 

DEPARTMENT MISSION

The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center of Chicago (RJKCCC) exists to express the mission and ministry of The Salvation Army through a safe, enriching and sacred environment where all individuals have access to opportunities to reach their physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential.  The Vision of the Chicago Kroc Center is to impact individuals, families and seniors of the Southside while building community, promoting excellence, motivating wellness, teaching character, and encouraging faith.

                                                                            

OUTCOMES

The Dance Instructor is responsible for the teaching of varied dance genres; based on the offerings of the Academy of the Arts dance programs.  Dance Instructors should be qualified to teach beginning through advanced levels of Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Contemporary, Tap, Latin, Cultural and/or Hip Hop.  The Dance Instructor works directly with the Performance & Visual Arts Manager in developing course syllabi and dance class instruction consistent with the mission of The Salvation Army. This is a part-time position requiring evenings, weekends and scheduled attendance at the Kroc Center and events outside of the regular work day. 

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Responsible for the teaching of dance techniques to whatever level of student enrolled in a class, and summer camp.

  1. Responsible for the teaching of daily dance offerings at the center.
  2. Responsible for the development of performance rubrics and lesson plans for each activity offered to all age groups consistent with TSA Kroc standards.
  3. Provide briefing of activities to the Performance & Visual Arts Manager when called upon.
  4. Develop partnerships for arts programming with schools & organizations.
  5. Responsible for recruitment of students.
  6. Responsible for working with Kroc staff to promote ALL Kroc Center Programming.
  7. Establish and nurture relationships with local, regional and national arts organizations.
  8. Is expected to be on time and on task throughout the duration of the class.
  9. Is expected to participate in all activities of RJKCCC and the Academy of the Arts.
  10. Instructors should lead by example in areas such as punctuality, responsibility, motivation, and professionalism.
  11. Effectively design curriculums for all levels and populations according to the National Dance Standards.
  12. Record and maintain attendance records.
  13. Set-up studio and return space to neat state upon completion of class.
  14. Choreograph designated pieces as directed. 
  15. Responsible for participating in the Visual and Performance Arts School Series on and off Kroc Center site.
  16. Attend ALL staff meetings as it relates to the Arts & Education Department and the RJKCCC.
  17. Immediately notify the Performance & Visual Arts Manager of any broken equipment or unsafe aspects of studio space.
  18. Perform other duties as assigned by the Visual Arts Manager or designee.
  19. Immediately report all incidents and accidents to the Performance and Visual Arts Manager or designee.

 

RELATIONSHIPS

This individual interacts with a wide range of contacts both within and outside The Salvation Army.

In these contacts they act as a representative of The Salvation Army and its mission.

 

PERFORMANCE MEASURMENTS

This individual will be evaluated on how effectively the outcomes of this position are achieved, as well as the timeliness, accuracy and completeness of accomplishing assigned goals.

 

Feedback through classroom observation, participant & parent surveys will be evaluated.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE

  1. Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Dance, or other related field.
  2. 3-5 years teaching experience as a teacher or arts practitioner working with children.
  3. At least 4-6 years as a dance performer.
  4. Must be Safe from Harm certified within 30 days of hire.
  5. Must be CPR/First Aid certified within 30 days of hire.
  6. A valid Illinois Driver’s License/MVR clearance.

 

COMPETENCIES

  1. Experience in curriculum development in dance and be prepared to provide evidence of such.
  2. Must have experience in dance performance and be prepared to provide evidence of such.
  3. Must have a working knowledge of dance literature in the development of a music library.
  4. Must be willing to teach evening & weekend classes and workshops when necessary.
  5. Must attend all trainings and meetings required by the Salvation Army.
  6. Have a philosophy of education and child development, which is consistent with that of the RJKCCC and the Salvation Army.
  7. Have the ability to work with children, parents and staff in a capacity of leadership, counseling and education including, but not limited to:
    1. Ability of relate joyfully and sensitively to children of all ages
    2. Sensitivity to the individual needs of children while maintaining group identity
    3. Ability to use appropriate positive discipline consistently
    4. Dependability
    5. Ability to handle security and crisis situations in a calm manner
    6. Ability to seek supervision and use it consistently
    7. Ability to engage and maintain a child’s interest in the activities offered
  8. Membership in local, state, national organizations and other professional music organizations is highly preferred but not required.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position is required to do light to moderate physical work.  In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to use standard office equipment and a PC or for executing educational programs. The work environment for this position includes high levels of noise and flexibility in a constant changing environment.  Must be able to lift and carry 40 lbs.

 

COMPENSATION

Non Exempt/Part-Time
