Reports to (Title):     Fitness Center Manager

 

MISSION

OUTCOMES

Under the direction of the Fitness Center Manager, Personal Trainers are responsible for providing orientation to new members, assisting members with their workouts and provide personal training services and provide a safe environment at the RJKCCC in Chicago, IL.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Client Services
    1. Conduct a pre-exercise health screening/fitness assessment for all new clients on site.
    2. Conduct proper exercise equipment orientations for patrons as scheduled.
    3. Create safe and appropriate exercise programs for clients.
    4. Monitor each client assigned during each session, while educating them on proper technique, and to ensure safe use of all fitness equipment.
    5. Design a goal-setting strategy for each client and an action plan to achieve those goals.
    6. Ensure proper exercise mode, duration, frequency, intensity and progression is established for each client.
    7. Move, set-up and operate fitness equipment as it relates to the session being taught, and return to proper location once the session has ended.  
    8. Ensure that all personal training sessions occur on site.
    9. Arrive 15 minutes prior to each session, fully prepared to work with client. 
  1. Administration
    1. Become familiar with and consistently enforce all RJKCCC center policies and procedures.
      1. Make recommendations to improve center operations.
    2. Ensure all pre-exercise paperwork, waivers and consent forms are completed prior to beginning any sessions with a client.
    3. Ensure all billing, fee schedules, and payroll forms are properly completed. 
  1. Safety
    1. Recognize and respond quickly and effectively in all emergency situations.
    2. Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services, based upon level of certification. 
  1. Other Duties
    1. Attend and participate in personal training staff in-service programs.
    2. Maintain appropriate fitness level to ensure compliance with standard requirements to perform job duties (cardio, skills, strength and endurance).
    3. Maintain confidentiality and comply with Safe From Harm guidelines.
    4. Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with clients, co-workers and supervisors. This includes, but is not limited to, such actions as: resolution of conflicts in a professional manner; courteous treatment of staff, visitors and clients; respect of others’ property and person; and professional and appropriate communication to and about clients, co-workers and supervisors.
    5. Other duties as assigned.

 

PERFORMANCE MEASURES

Personal Trainers will be evaluated on how effectively they deliver quality and safe training sessions to the RJKCCC patrons, customer service skills, accurate and consistent record-keeping of patrons, attendance, professional outcomes of this position are achieved, as well as the timeliness, accuracy and completeness of accomplishing assigned goals.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Current American Red Cross CPR/AED and First Aid certification or equivalent.
  • Current PT certification from an NCCA recognized organization such as ACE, NASM, ACSM, NSCA, AFAA or similar.
  • Must be Safe From Harm certified within 30 days of hire.

 

COMPETENCIES

  • Thorough knowledge on how to design custom training sessions depending on the client needs and fitness goals.
  • Ability to demonstrate proper exercise technique through mirrored movements.
  • Able to perform thorough fitness assessments and analyze results as they relate to the clients’ levels of physical fitness and their training needs and limitations.
  • Ability to speak before small and large groups with poise and enthusiasm.
  • A thorough understanding of all RJKCCC policies and procedures.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively during emergency situations.
  • Knowledge of fitness and weight equipment, their use and the associated muscle group targeted by the associated exercise, and communicate this information to patrons.
  • Knowledge of quality customer service standards and procedures.
  • Ability to recruit and retain clients, and sale sessions and programs .
  • Must have excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
  • Willingness to support the mission of The Salvation Army.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

Must be able to do moderate physical work, capable of meeting the demands of demonstrating movements associated with personal training and providing instruction.   Ability to sit and stand for long periods of time and to lift and carry 45 lbs. occasionally.  Ability to bend, squat, kneel, twist, reach, stretch, and climb to effectively lead classes for extended periods of time.  Will be subject to modified/flexible work schedule.  The work environment for this position includes a community center with high noise level.
