Overview

Job Objective

The Assistant Teacher is a team member with the Director and Teaching Staff in working toward the overall mission, philosophy, and objectives of The Salvation Army.  The Assistant Teacher aids in providing an environment which foster development of the whole child while meeting the needs of the parents.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Assist the Teacher in carrying out philosophy, goals, curriculum and activities with groups of children.
  • Assist the Teacher in setting up and cleaning up materials and supplies needed for carrying out activities.
  • Assist in implementing the curriculum, meeting the emotional, physical, intellectual, social and spiritual needs of the children in keeping with the philosophy and mission of The Salvation Army.
  • Maintain an environment that helps each child to have a positive experience throughout the day.
  • Treat all children with dignity and respect and allow for individual differences.
  • Provide an atmosphere of acceptance and caring for each child and show as much individual attention as possible to each child. Comfort distress immediately and provide a curriculum that helps each child deveop to the fullest in each area of development.
  • Be familiar with and adhere to the program’s policies, health and safety regulations, and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain a professional attitude toward the program, the children, and the staff and assist if needed, with appropriate communication. Be an example of professional behavior and appropriate communication at all times.
  • Assist in planning, preparing and caring for the environment.
  • Participate in ongoing training of staff through in-service training, staff meetings, orientation and other so designated programs.
  • In coordination with Directors and Teachers, communicate frequently with families, children and other staff both verbally and in writing. Cooperate with Directors and Teachers in carrying out the philosophy and goals of the center.
  • Maintain close touch with the community and parents to foster understanding of the child care program and needs.
  • Attend regular staff meetings and direction by the Child Center Director or Lead Teacher.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be 18 years of age or older.  Must have satisfactorily completed one course for credit from an institution of higher education, or non-credit department approved course in Early Childhood (or its equivalent) or completes that training within 6 months after assuming the position, or must have satisfactorily completed an assistant child care teacher training program approved by the Wisconsin  Department of instruction.  Youngstar level 2 required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  Employee must have reliable transportation to move about service area and between Salvation Army locations.

 

Travel: Local for field trips, etc., and for seminars and training.

 

Working Conditions:  Much of this job is performed indoors in normal room temperature conditions.  When the duties require being outdoors, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

At times the duties will involve working with individuals having infectious and/or communicable diseases.
