Job Summary:

The Recreational Program Counselor is charged with being a positive Christian influence to all campers and guests. Responsibilities include developing campers’ social, physical, intellectual, vocational, emotional and spiritual strengths, through group programming. The Recreational Program Counselor will also serve in other capacities around camp.

Responsibilities

Essential Responsibilities: 

  • Leading and preparing all the various activities on our camp schedule. Counselors will be trained to lead any of the following activities: Archery, Rifles, Paintball, High Ropes, Song Leading, Bible Lessons, Craft Sessions, Teambuilding, Group Games, and more.
  • Interacting and engaging with campers. Counselors will be assigned to hang out with cabin groups and expected to play, talk, and teach with campers during each camp session.
  • Supervising Camper Activity. Counselors will be trained on how to appropriately deal with camper behaviors and ask to intervene when there is conflict but also how to care for all the campers needs and developmental processes.
  • Maintaining and Cleaning Facilities. All our staff will help with cleaning and sanitizing between sessions as well as picking up program areas.
  • Help with First Aid as needed. Training provided.
  • Help in Kitchen Duties. Should be willing to assist with dining hall clean up and washing dishes when necessary.
  • Serve our campers and groups as needed. Must be willing to maintain hospitality and help anyone who needs it.
  • Maintain positive work atmosphere through appropriate conflict management, courteous demeanor, and professional and appropriate communication practices.
  • Maintain compliance in The Salvation Army’s “Safe from Harm” Certification.
  • Perform other duties as assigned as related to camp programming.

 

Travel may be required.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • All Staff will be asked to stay at camp during all summer sessions. Due to COVID, we may require all our staff to remain on site during and in between each camp session. Housing and food will be provided. 
  • All Staff will be asked to wear face masks or protective shield during all sessions which engage with campers in accordance with CDC Guidelines. 

Individual must have specific knowledge and work experience related to working with children.  Also, individual must be willing to become familiar with and support the mission of The Salvation Army.

 

Candidates must successfully pass the pre-employment background inquiry and possibly an annual motor vehicle check with a valid driver’s license.

 

Education:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.

 

Skills:

 

  • Ability to efficiently and effectively manage people and projects successfully.
  • Team player, self-starter, and perform well with minimal supervision.
  • Must have an interest and ability to work with people of diverse racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds in a sensitive and culturally appropriate manner.
  • Excellent communication skills, including experience or capacity to demonstrate positive interpersonal skills and work as a cooperative team member.

 

Physical Demands/ Work Environment:

This Position is required to do moderate physical work.  In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the individual is regularly required to be standing for long periods of time, use hands and fingers, communicate, move, occasionally required to position self to stoop, kneel or crouch, frequently required to reach with and use arms and hands as required with working with kids.  Specific vision abilities by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to focus.  The work environment for this position is in a cabin and outdoors with varying degrees of heat and with a moderate noise level.
