Job Summary:

Assist in preparing and serving meals in Safe Harbor Shelter, filling in for meals when the current Kitchen Manager is unavailable. Kitchen and Shelter Helper also assists with  shelter operation and sanitation procedures including answering phones, cleaning, and providing basic items to program participants.

Responsibilities

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Assists Kitchen Manager in planning, preparing, and serving meals as needed.
  • Prepare and serve a well-balanced meal for 50-100 individuals if Kitchen Manager is unavailable.
  • Prepare a dinner meal when there is not a volunteer group scheduled or a cancellation.
  • Pick up food donations and supplies.
  • Assist Kitchen Manager in coordination of volunteers, court service workers, and donations.
  • Maintain an accurate count of meals served.
  • Receive and document donations and gifts received.
  • Attend staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Maintain compliance with McLean County Health Department Standards.
  • Answer telephone providing assistance and information as needed.
  • Check clients in and out of the building.
  • Ensure safety of clients.
  • Enforce program guidelines and policies and procedure.
  • Ensure the building is clean and sanitary at the end of a shift.
  • Maintain positive work atmosphere through appropriate conflict management, courteous demeanor, and professional and appropriate communication practices.
  • Maintain compliance in The Salvation Army’s “Safe from Harm” Certification.
  • Perform other duties as assigned as related to kitchen or shelter needs, assigned by Kitchen manager or Social Service Director.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

Candidates must have a passion for fulfilling the mission of The Salvation Army and must be articulate in presenting the same to others. Candidates must successfully pass the pre-employment background inquiry and annual motor vehicle check with a valid driver’s license. Candidates must possess or have the ability to possess food service sanitation certificate.

 

Education:

High School Diploma or Equivalent

 

Skills:

  • Must have an interest and ability to work with people of diverse racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds in a sensitive and culturally appropriate manner.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience or capacity to demonstrate positive interpersonal skills and work as a cooperative team member.
  • Demonstrated awareness of budget resources and cost control
  • Must be able to work days, evenings, weekends and holidays as necessary, especially in emergent situations.

Physical Demands/ Work Environment:

This Position is required to do basic business and office work. In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the individual is regularly required to talk and listen, stand, walk, sit and use hands.  Individual must be able to regularly lift up to 30 pounds and occassionally lift up to fifty pounds.  The use of Office and Computer Equipment is necessary. Vision abilities will require close vision.  Work may be performed indoors and occasionally require outdoors to attend meetings. There is low to moderate noise level for this position.
